Until the middle of the 20th century, meadow orchards served as the main source of our fruit. Nowadays, the amount of consumed orchard fruit is very small.
The orchard fruit often remains unused, although it is valuable, unsprayed and locally produced fruit. In order to use the fruit more again and thus counteract food waste, the online platform “Kierfchen” was developed by the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall. The platform was financed by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development.
Participate: Who and where?
All actors who are active in the area of the orchard meadows are addressed. Thus, orchard owners, consumers, local producers, restaurants and beekeepers can get in touch with each other. Both offers and demand for orchard fruit, activities, harvesters and much more, can be viewed free of charge on an interactive map. The interactive map covers the area of the eleven member municipalities of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall (Beaufort, Bech, Berdorf, Consdorf, Echternach, Fischbach, Heffingen, Larochette, Nommern, Rosport-Mompach, Waldbillig), the joining municipality Reisdorf and the municipality of Ernztal.
Anyone who owns or cultivates a meadow orchard in the Mëllerdall region can offer orchard fruit. Consumers and producers from all over Luxembourg can look for fruit from Mëllerdall and turn it into tasty food and drink.
Conservation through use
Increasing the use of orchard fruit has many benefits. The supply of healthy fruit, the reduction of long transport routes, the preservation of orchards and the diversification of agricultural production are promoted.
