Fascinating geological history: explore the “Haupeschbaach” and “Halerbaach” valleys
The Geo-Pad “Haupeschbaach an Halerbaach” promises an adventurous hike full of natural beauty and geological discoveries.
The trail runs for 5 km through the valley of the Haupeschbaach and the Halerbaach, a typical narrow valley in the Luxembourg sandstone. The route is marked with a fossil oyster (“Devil’s Claw“), this reminds us that the rocks of the region were formed in a sea a long time ago. The valley is an extremely valuable area: it is a geosite of the Mëllerdall UNESCO Global Geopark, part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and listed on Luxembourg’s list of national monuments since 1938.
Along the way, interactive devices invite you to make exciting discoveries about water: How is water involved in the formation of sandstone? Which processes can we observe today at a stream? What animals and plants live in or close to streams? Where does the water come from and how do people use the water and its power?
From the tourist information centre in Beaufort, you can easily reach the starting point of the Geo-Pad. Walk along the main road (Grand-rue/route de Grundhof) until you reach the roundabout, then turn right onto the Härewiss parking lot, where you will find the first panel of the Geo-Pad “Haupeschbaach an Halerbaach” (distance 1 km).
Enjoy the nature and the wild rushing of the water along the path!
Tip: Combine the hike with a visit to the Geo-Expo, which is open daily between 10 am and 5 pm (free admission, 100 metres from the starting arriving point).
