Various strata of Luxembourg sandstone are suitable for use as quarry- and building-stones. Sandstone was extracted in the Beaufort and Dillingen quarries until the 1970s. The stones were used in various buildings locally, nationally and beyond the national borders. The quarries had a high economic value and brought work for many people. The stone was transported to Grundhof with a narrow-gauge railway. The rail line was built as a zig-zag railway with three switchback turns in order to overcome the steep gradient. Today, the quarry is of great value in terms of nature conservation: wall lizards and wild bees can readily be observed on the sunny rock walls.
The hiking trail Mensch & Stein (men and stone) leads through this geosite.
